For beginners, Yoga is not about being flexible, but about strengthening your body and your spine in all directions with the goal of creating a union between the mind, body, and spirit. For your first class, all that matters is that you attempt the postures without pushing yourself. The heat in the studio means that you will get into the postures more deeply and effectively, allowing the advanced poses to happen sooner because your body becomes more flexible. Most poses are physically challenging but the heat allows you to get into a pose you never imagined you could do. The hot yoga poses not only work on your muscles but also on your internal organs. Each pose stretches and strengthens your muscles, joints, and ligaments and at the same time releases the toxins. Like thousands before you, you will find that practicing yoga in the heated room creates a satisfying and addictive feeling of achievement.
Literally, the word yoga means to unite. It is through yoga that we work towards uniting a harmonious integration of the body, mind, and spirit; resulting in optimal health and longevity. According to yoga philosophy, it's the flexibility of the spine, not the number of years, that determines a person's age. With that said, you're only as old as you feel. A Healthy Lifestyle
Hot Yoga let's you trade in the characteristics of age with characteristics of youth. Longer life results from yogic ways because external dangers and habits that lead to degeneration have been eliminated. Hot Yoga also slows down the aging process by giving elasticity to the spine, firming up the skin, removing tension from the body, strengthening abdominal muscles, and correcting poor posture. In addition, practicing hot yoga on a regular basis will allow you to sleep better at night. The simple beauty of hot yoga is that you leave the mat with patience, gratitude, and the promise of new beginnings every single time you practice.
A Healing Practice
You will very rapidly start to feel strong and healthy, no matter how you are already feeling. Whether your back is hurting or you are working with a particular injury, from your very first class, you will feel profoundly better. All you have to do is make the time for yourself.
Be prepared to exert yourself, sweat, move, twist and lunge as you immediately start to build strong bones, sculpt strong, lean muscles, gain vitality, create optimum balance, advance mental clarity, enhance sense of well-being, and feel more healthy and alive than you have since childhood.
Yoga and Aging
Yoga has a marked effect on the pituitary gland, thyroid, adrenal, and sex glands. This produces a feeling of wellbeing, prevents premature aging, and extends sexual virility well into old age. Yoga reduces facial wrinkles mainly due to the inverted postures like headstand and shoulder stand. By doing the inverted postures regularly a few minutes each day, we reverse the effect of gravity and use it to our advantage by giving us firmer facial muscles. Due to yoga's rejuvenating effects on the glands and nervous system, including the brain, practicing hot yoga results in a positive mental/emotional state, helping you feel more confident, enthusiastic, optimistic, and creative in your everyday life!
Any exercise program focuses on warming up our bodies before vigorous activity. The temperature of the yoga room is a little higher than our body's own temperature. This accelerates improvement in many of the benefits of your yoga practice. Regular exercisers recognize that peak performance occurs when fully warmed up and your body generates heat from the inside radiating out and into your muscles. Detoxification and elimination through the skin, the body's largest eliminating organ, is similar to when your body raises its temperature to fight infection. The raised temperature in the room will assist in improving the proper functioning of your immune system. Your nervous system function is greatly improved and messages are carried more efficiently to and from your brain. Metabolism improves in your digestive system and in the body's cells.
Our modern lifestyles makes most people's skin inactive. Unfortunately, many of us simply don't sweat, especially in the winter. Some of us avoid sweating at all costs! There are a variety of things we do in life that prevents our skin from breathing and damages our skin and our natural ability for elimination. Our skin is exposed to thousands of chemicals throughout our lives, and is profoundly affected by each one. Thankfully, regular sweating while practicing yoga gradually restores the skin's elimination ability. Heat exposure during yoga practice stimulates the production of white blood cells and vastly strengthens the immune system while increasing and improving the rate of blood circulation and breathing. All of the systems in your body will begin to function better.
Sweating is effective in flushing out toxins and disease and maintaining optimal physical as well as mental health. Don't forget, the skin is the largest organ in the body and through the pores it plays a major role in the detoxifying process alongside the lungs, kidneys, bowels, liver and the lymphatic and immune systems. The skin produces cool sweat to regulate the body's elevated temperature. It also has the keen ability to transform toxins from lipid soluble or oil-based, into easier to eliminate, water-soluble forms. Sweat carries toxins out of the body and flushes them through the pores. Sweating is the body's safe and natural way to heal.
Warm Vinyasa or Flow Yoga
The word Vinyasa means to link together with purpose. This form of yoga integrates rhythmic breathing with conscious movement and is performed in a warm room. By uniting body and breath, you'll learn to move moment to moment with absolute awareness. This is done when you are moving from posture to posture faster than with hot yoga; which is typically slower moving because the postures are being held for extended periods of time. Because you are moving more rapidly, your breath speeds up and your body will begin to sweat, adding moisture to the room. The increased moisture in the air makes you sweat even more and the room feels like it is at a higher temperature than it actually is! The more people in the room, the more moisture is created and the more we sweat.

The average 140 lb. person burns 600 to 900 calories in one of our 90 minute classes, depending on how hard you are working. Weight loss is virtually effortless because your body burns fat more effectively and fat may be redistributed and burned as energy during the class. It is common to lose inches of excess body fat in a very short time. The heat produces a fluid-like stretch allowing for a greater range of movement in joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body. Capillaries dilate in the heat; more effectively oxygenating the tissues, muscles, glands and organs helping in the removal of waste. Your peripheral circulation improves due to enhanced perfusion of your extremities. Your metabolism speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids. You benefit from a strengthening of willpower, self control, concentration and determination in this challenging environment. Your cardiovascular system gets a thoroughly phenomenal workout. Your muscles and connective tissue become more elastic and allow for greater flexibility with less chance of injury and improved resolution of injury.
